1/2 C. cornstarch
2/3 C. sugar
3 slightly beaten egg yolks
2 Tbsp. butter
1 Ib. bananas (4 or 5 bananas)
¿ tsp. vanilla
2 C. milk ‡ tsp. salt
1 pkg. vanilla wafers
Meringue: 3 egg whites
6 Tbsp. sugar
Mix cornstarch, 2/3 C. sugar and salt. Gradually add milk. Cook in double boiler about 10 minutes, stirring constantly until thick. Slowly add small amount of hot mixture into egg yolks and pour back into hot mixture.
Cook 5 minutes more. Remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla. Cool. Alternate in baking dish with layer of wafers, sliced bananas and pudding. Spread with meringue made by beating egg whites until foamy, adding sugar gradually and beating until stiff. Bake at 450 degrees until browned (about 3 minutes).
