Nintendo, a company with roots in playing cards and arcade games, entered the home console market with the Famicom, which was an immediate success in Japan. In 1985, Nintendo rebranded the console for North America as the NES, launching it with a limited release in New York City to test the market. The NES featured innovative technology, including an 8-bit processor, and a cartridge-based system, allowing for a wide variety of games.
One of the key factors in the NES's success was its robust library of games, including iconic titles such as "Super Mario Bros.," "The Legend of Zelda," and "Metroid." These games were not only entertaining but also introduced new gameplay mechanics and storytelling techniques that set the standard for future video games. Additionally, Nintendo implemented a strict quality control system, ensuring that games met certain standards before being released, which helped rebuild consumer confidence in video games.

By the end of its production in the mid-1990s, the NES had sold over 60 million units worldwide, firmly establishing Nintendo as a dominant force in the gaming industry.
